How I Renewed My Driving License (For Those Under 40): A Step-by-Step Guide

Here’s how I renewed my driving license—step by step, with some tips for those who might be going through the same process:

Step 1: Check Your License Status

I visited the Parivahan site and entered my license ID, only to receive a message saying it wasn’t available in their database. The system prompted me to contact my local RTO. Since my hometown is quite far, I wasn’t sure how to proceed.

Step 2: Seek Help from a Local Driving School

I decided to visit a nearby driving school based on recommendations from a few people. The helpdesk lady there was super helpful and explained that I needed to get a backlog update from my hometown RTO to proceed. Alternatively, I could apply for a new license locally, but that would be more expensive and require retaking the driving test.

Step 3: Get the Backlog Update

I contacted a known driving school in my hometown. They asked for a photo of my existing license and charged ₹500. Within two days, they completed the backlog entry, and I received a message with my updated license ID, making my details available in the central database. I didn’t need to visit my hometown in person; everything was taken care of while I stayed at home.

Step 4: Submit the Renewal Application Online

Step 10: Acknowledgment

I was given an acknowledgment slip that I can use as proof until my renewed license arrives. According to the RTO, it should reach me within 21 working days.

I kept checking the status of my application over the next 3-4 weeks. The status consistently showed "SCRUTINY - Verification of Proof Documents," and I wasn’t sure what steps to take next. After nearly a month of waiting, I decided to file a grievance through the site. Within 4-5 days of submitting the grievance, I received a congratulatory message on my phone, notifying me of the renewal of my license. I checked my license details on parivahan.gov.in, and the updated information was displayed. While I’m still waiting for the physical card, I hope to receive it soon.
