Sikkim: The Small Wonder

Hey everyone! Long time no see! Sorry I left my Rajasthan diaries hanging – got caught up with some important stuff. Before I could finish that, guess what? We went to Sikkim! Another travelogue series, you ask? Nope! This time, I’m keeping it short and sweet, wrapping up everything I want to say in just a couple of posts.

Why Sikkim, you ask? You’ve probably heard of itineraries involving Darjeeling, Gangtok, and Nepal, but a trip solely to Sikkim might sound unusual. In the summer, Bangalore's weather is so much more manageable than most of India's that picking a vacation spot seems as futile as searching for ice in the desert. I gave the cold shoulder to cooler options like Kashmir, Leh-Ladakh, and Himachal Pradesh because it feels like the entire population of India flocks there in the summer. Those dreamy spots are calling my name, but I'm biding my time until they're as forgotten as Pappu's last joke. Left with only the desi option of the North-East, I eyed Sikkim for its weather. Since I'm not keen on packed places like Darjeeling or Gangtok, I delved deeper and was blown away by the assortment of destinations this pint-sized state had to offer.

My decision was spot on! We had an absolute blast on the trip. Majestic mountains, misty hills, alpine forests, cascading waterfalls, winding roads, cloudy skies, vibrant flowers, chirping birds, and colorful butterflies – nature has truly blessed this place with unparalleled beauty. Serene monasteries, warm and down-to-earth locals, cuddly furry friends, delightfully simple cuisine, pure air, and pristine water – it's a recipe for nourishing the soul.

Sikkim through my child's eye

This time, I'll skip describing Sikkim's beauty in words because, let's face it, it's hard to capture its magic with mere descriptions. A picture or a video says it all. So, if you're keen on experiencing Sikkim's natural wonders, feel free to check out my reels on Instagram. Instead, what I'm about to share here are the fascinating things about this tiny state that left me in awe and are sure to amaze you too. Let's get going.

A Unique Experience: Sikkim's journey from an independent country to a part of India in 1975 has infused a distinct flavor into the nation's cultural tapestry. Having explored numerous states across India, I've come to appreciate the subtle variations in culture – from cuisine and attire to language and architecture. However, stepping foot in Sikkim is like entering a whole new world. The difference is palpable. Trust me, Sikkim stands out in its uniqueness, offering an experience unlike any other in India.

Behold Kanchenjunga: Behold the majestic Kanchenjunga! From different corners of Sikkim, this towering peak highest in India, greets you with its awe-inspiring presence, a sight to behold. Ah, don't take it for granted. Kanchenjunga loves playing hide and seek, often shrouded in clouds, revealing itself only to the early risers.

As you journey through, you'll feel as if you could sketch the borders yourself, given how close you are to them. Expect a noticeable military presence and regular permit requirements.

Organic Revolution: Sikkim made history in 2016 by becoming the world's first fully organic state, embracing nature's wisdom in every aspect of life.

Environment Conciousness: Sikkim is known to be the most environment concious state. Environmental stewardship is ingrained in Sikkim's DNA, making it a shining example of sustainability and conservation. Did you know?
